Rannock was a foundation ASH sire born in 1967. The story of his legacy has not been told. He was recently recognised in the Australian Stock Horse Society’s Hall of Fame, which is remarkable, for despite limited opportunity, he has risen to this honour.
Great horses deserve to have their stories told. The true heritage Australian Stock Horse is the “breed for every need” which can compete in the three main specialties of polo/polocrosse, campdrafting, and showing, and also in open disciplines, far outside the range of the traditional stock horse. Rannock was certainly one of these.
In many ways, this is a compilation of the records of South Australian families and their horses, not just Rannock, a scene which has long been regarded as an outlier by mainstream Australian Stock Horse enthusiasts. Hopefully this book will help to correct that oversight. It is an attempt to preserve information which would otherwise be lost. It also serves as a testament to those breeders who knew and upheld the traditions of breeding good horses, sadly, not always followed in today’s world of specialisation, and desire for quick results.
It is a historical reference document for future breeders, as it tells the story of a time which can quickly be overlooked, or dismissed as no longer relevant. The foundation horses of a breed, should always have their stories recorded, for interest in a breed’s history is a reason for newcomers to be attracted to a breed, and lessons can be learned along the way.
